A happy flock of first-graders was a delightful sight yesterday afternoon at the Frick Environmental Center. These spritely campers had explored the pond, and then made wind socks decorated with aquatic motifs. I happened to be there just as the kids, released from their art session back to the outdoors, came running joyfully across the lawn, with their wind socks aloft like a flock of long-feathered white birds. Magical moments like these are what create a life-long love of nature and appreciation for parks. The proof is in the pudding — one of the Center’s imaginative staff of environmental educators began her career there as a three-year-old camper! — in this case, a very cool snack of “pond muck” (chocolate pudding) with gummy worms and frog cookies.
